“Fit2Fight – Apiary Management for the Asian Hornet”, describes the beekeeping methods Alan Baxter developed in France to manage his apiary whilst under attack by Asian Hornets. Alan explains how we can continue to enjoy keeping bees and enjoy the produce of the hive despite the threat from this dangerous apex predator. Alan Baxter began his beekeeping adventure in the Loire Valley in France, where he attended University and worked for 23 years. His apiary there was the target of heavy predation by Asian Hornets and he developed apiary management techniques to help his bees survive the onslaught. After moving to England in 2020 he manages 20 colonies of gentle honey bees and breeds his own queens in 3 apiaries in Hampshire. He has completed all the BBKA Master Beekeeper Modules and holds the General Certificate in Beekeeping Husbandry. He serves as a Hampshire Beekeepers Association Trustee and Asian Hornet Coordinator, is an adviser to the British Beekeepers Association on the Asian Hornet and a member of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Resilience Forum. Alan writes regular blogs and articles and gives talks and seminars around the country on Beekeeping, the Asian Hornet, the Wines of the Loire Valley, and the 1982 Falklands War. He is the author of the Hampshire Asian Hornet Contingency Plan and a book Fit2Fight- A Practical Guide to Managing the Asian Hornet published by Northern Bee Books Ltd. In addition to beekeeping, writing and studying to be a Master Beekeeper in Britain and at Cornell University in America, Alan is Chair of Trustees of the Catisfield Memorial Hall and enjoys running, cycling, swimming, Pilates, cooking and bread making.
